Our coaching programs are designed to help cyclists of all ages and ability levels to train as efficiently as possible and reach their goals. No structured training program or specific goals to aim for

You may only have a vague idea of what you’d like to achieve in your cycling career - and more often than not, this can be totally out of reach to achieve based on your current training method. Leaving you to plod your way through the season, dipping into different workouts when you feel like it. Do you think winners act and train like that? Taking training advice and programs from ‘old school’ club coaches who have been around for 100 years, coaching the same way they were coached all those years ago without any consideration for you as an individual.  You could be doing training that is causing more harm than good and then you wonder why you’re not getting the result you deserve. The cycling world has changed and if you want to win you are going to have to move with the times, away from those stuck in the past – and you’ll notice and feel the difference almost instantly.

Modern life is getting more and more hectic.

With your busy lifestyle you have little time and have to squeeze your training into your schedule. When you do find the time, you are just too darn knackered to even think about training, never mind actually doing it. Your mind and your body is simply too busy to focus on training efficiently. The solution is training ‘smarter’ not necessarily ‘harder’ and plotting your training into your daily schedule. Distraction by the latest ‘must have’-release in bikes and equipment. Stealing your attention away from the fundamentals of training and winning. Yes, a high-end $10,000 rig is fun and you will be faster on it, but if you have your priorities right and want to achieve the best cost-effect ratio, you want to ensure a proper bike fit (on your old bike) first and optimize your training. In the words of Mr. Armstrong “It’s not about the bike,” it’s about what’s in your legs and how you think and no amount of money spent on a bike will get you to the top of the podium without you putting in the work.

Using generic training programs 

Using a program where all the athletes in a team or club follow the same program or a program taken from a cycling book simply does not work. Both completely ignore your individual talents, strengths, weaknesses, your goals, and your available training time. You are left confused and wondering if you are ever going to go any faster. There are mountains of conflicting information about training and a lot of advice is freely given out by people who ‘think’ they know what’s best for you. But they don’t really have a clue, causing even more confusion.

Not measuring improvements other than short term race results 

Short-term race results are dependent on race conditions, your competitors, your form, and type of event – all things that you can’t control. Sure you “feel” like you are getting better, but are you really? How do you know if what you are doing is actually working? It can feel like a hard slog if you don’t see any improvements until months later and this can lead to a decline in your motivation levels, resulting in less training. Thus leading to utter frustration and humiliation of losing races you know you should be winning.

This is how it all started for us: Richard went from being a burnt-out, clueless road rider to racing professionally in Europe and in the US. He went on to win National titles on th road.
“I was used to receiving a “club-based” training program, given to me by a crinkly old coach who had been around for decades, unwilling to adapt his coaching approach to the latest scientific findings. I was overtraining and doing sessions that were not relevant to me – and my performances in races were suffering – and worst of all, I was blaming myself! Then as chance would have it, I met a nutty sports-minded science crack, named Marten who noticed my senseless training program, took initiative and agreed to help me out with my training. That was just the start of a complete overhaul of my cycling training and career. My training completely changed. The volumes changed and I was working on ‘essential’ cycling areas that, at the time, never occurred to me actually needed to be worked on! Then things started to turn for me – my training started going well, I was getting enough time to recover, and I was getting results in races all over the place. Now that I had found something that worked, I became obsessed with the idea of getting faster, quicker. I became a cycling maniac, hunting down every conceivable way to get the most out of my legs - without doing any extra training on top of my normal load. Marten and I started using a way more holistic approach. What we figured out was that most of my limiters weren't even of physiological nature. Everyone thought I was nuts for cutting the volume of training back, optimizing intensities, and working on my ‘mental game’, using visualization tecniques. But the kind of results I was getting created quite a stir, not only for me but for Marten as well."

Richard managed to sign a contract with a German pro team and eventually moved to the US, where he raced for Rite Aid Pro Cycling. Most likely this wouldn't have been possible without making such significant changes to his training program. Seeing such results sparked the idea to help others trying to achieve their dreams. Synergy ProTraining was born.

To substantiate our persopnal experience, we went through many years of acadamic studies. Marten is a sports scientist and psychologist and Richard holds a degree in exercise science. Using the latest scientific findings and conducting our own research we were able to build an effective training formula:

Let us walk you through exactly what is going to happen: from the first contact, your first one-on-one phone consultation and athlete profile, all resulting in you getting a brand-spanking new personalized training program.


Personalized Cycling Sucess Plan (before season outline - outline, daily plan, strength als Unterpunkte)

Your personalized success plan will be created for you once we have the in-depth assessment, including your athlete profile. It will consIst of a season outline, a daily, detailed training plan for each 2-4 week training phase and a phase-specific strength training plan. We deliver all your programs electronically through your personal SPT Online Account. You will always know in advance what workouts you will be doing. There will be no hanging around, waiting on the coach to throw something together for you in their spare time - we are professionals and we treat you like a professional athlete.

1. Qualify / Concise Athlete Questionnaire

It doesn't matter how fit you are and what your goals are, but it is important to us that you are motivated and committed. We will give 100% to ensure that you achieve your goals, but again we do need your full committment. Since we are following a personal one-on-one approach we want to give you and us the chance to get to know each other briefly before we make the decision to start working together. Therefore we ask you to fill out a concise athlete questionnaire. We will then contact you and discuss the next steps. LINK

2. Finding the Right Coaching Package for You

After receiving the results of your concise athlete questionnaire we will contact you. Your first consultation will be with one of our top coaches. This gives you the chance to get to know us and more importantly for us to learn more about your goals and motivation level. Up to this point there is no commitment - for you or for us. Then it is decision time. If we decide to go forward we will assist you in chosing the right coaching package.

We have created four different support levels to perfectly match your needs: Iron, Bronze, Silver, and Gold. This variety will ensure that you get exactly the support you’ll need to crush your competition and reach your goals!

3. In-depth Assessment

Before we can work our magic, we take you through an in-depth assessment. In addition to general information about yourself, we will gather more detailed facts and numbers to be able to build a fully customized cycling training program for you. It will be purely focused on you, giving you the best program regarding your goals and circumstances. Using an extensive questionnaire as well as phone and email contact, we gather all the intelligence we need on you as an athlete - including reviewing your training history, your goals and ambitions, your strengths and weaknesses as an athlete, your lifestyle and time commitments, and your medical history. This gives us everything we need to create your personalized cycling success plan. It will be based entirely on your racing season and the goals you want to achieve, giving you the best and quickest way to get started towards dominating your cycling races.

Season Outline

The season outline provides a "birds-eye-view" for your entire season, dividing your season into specific training phases that are built around your main objectives. It will give you weekly training hours and state the main training focuses for each week. The season outline forms the backbone of your personalized cycling success plan and ensures that you will always stay on track. If necessary the season outline can be adjusted as we go along and things change.

Daily Training Program

Every 2-4 weeks, depending on the specific training phase, you will be provided with a daily training program, stating workouts, including an exact description of intensities and volume, down to the minute. Everything is planned around your daily life and your time commitments, which you can let us know about for each training phase, using the “time planner” in your personal SPT Online Account. Depending on your situation and your specific cycling events, you will have a mixture of endurance, power, speed, flexibility, strength, and everything else you need, all slotted perfectly into your timetable.

Phase-Specific Strength Plan

As part of your daily training program you will receive a strength plan, which is tailored completely around your needs and progresses along with your training on the bike. It complements your bike workouts and is designed to optimize muscular strength, muscular endurance or overall fitness, depending on your goals. Using the SPT Workout-Video Knowledgebase you will know exactly how to perform each exercise, making your training extremely effective.

Performance Log Analysis

Creating a super athletic body takes a bit of discipline, some planning and a coordinated approach. To help keep everything in one place you will be using a concise, personal training log.
You will complete and submit your electronic training log on a regular basis as we go along. This tool will help us see how you are progressing and how your body responds to the training load, allowing us to modify your training accordingly. Your feedback will be reflected in each of the following training programs. All athletes that are serious about their training should have a training log, regardless of whether they are aiming for local, national, or international glory.  Keeping a log of everything allows you to store and organize “experiences”, from which you can learn and benefit from in the future. 

Dynamic Plan Modification

Depending on which support level you choose, we will adapt your daily training plan dynamically. Things can change suddenly and with the dynamic-adaptation feature we can react to such changes immediately and ensure that you are always training as efficiently as possible. For example, you have just received your new training plan, based on your training log, feedback, and time schedule, but then something unexpected comes up. The changed availability makes it impossible for you to stick to the training plan. All you have to do, is let us know and we will acommodate your changed availability, all while ensuring the most efficient and effective training for you.

SPT Online Account

Your personal SPT Online Account will have all of your training programs, including your season outline, daily training programs and strength programs in chronological order, downloadable as pdf. You will also have access to all of your field and lab test results. Furthermore your online account will grant you access to the extensive SPT Workout-Video Knowledgebase (Bronze Package or higher).

Performance Testing

We will incorporate field tests in your training program on a regular basis and provide exact instructions on how to perform them. Another option is to come in for testing in out high-end human performance lab in Berlin, Germany. Frequent field and/or lab testing will help us to always provide you with the latest training zones (heart rate & watts). It will also help us to monitor your progress and ensure you are staying on track. Steady improvements that can be measured will super-charge your confidence and keep you going through the quieter months.

Your Coach

You'll be working with your personal SPT coach, with whom you'll be in constant communication using email, phone or Skype. Contact frequency depends on which coaching package you choose. But even our basic training program, the Iron package, includes a sufficient contact frequency so that your feedback, preferences, etc. can be incorporated in your fully customized training program. The higher coaching packages give you even more one-on-one time with your SPT Coach, ensuring that your training program is dialed in to every last detail.

The customization of your training program will not only be tailored to your goals and preference; it will be plotted into your daily schedule. Using the time planner tool in your online account you can let us know your availability regarding each training phase and we will build a schedule around your daily life. Furthermore, the Dynamic Plan Modification feature will give you much more flexibility. Even though each training phase will be perfectly fitted into your personal schedule beforehand, unexpected events might spring up during a training phase. The plan modification feature will ensure that your plan will be modified immediately. Another extra is the Monthly Training Log Review. Before we send, create, and upload each training program, we will review your training log. Training is a highly complex process that requires thorough planning. The first step in the creation of your fully customized training program is an extensive anamneses, during which we gather information about your goals, athletic history, physiology, and your daily life. If you are not entirely sure about your goals we'll assist you in determining challenging, yet realistic goals.

Based on the results of your in-depth assessment, preferences and goals we will develop your personalized cycling success strategy, which will consist of the following:
The Season Outline breaks your season down into particular training phases, leading up to your main objectives. Each phase consist of a 2-4 week program, including 2-3 building weeks and 1 rest week. The season outline also states the focus of your training, the total hours for each week, and includes your race schedule. It is meant to provide you with an overview and ensures that you stay on track. If necessary we will modify your outline as the season unfolds.
We will create a Detailed Daily Training Plan for every 2-4 week training phase in accordance with your season outline. We will never plan for more than 4 weeks in advance. Every training block is based on your progress, and your feedback from the previous phase. The detailed training plan will include exact workout descriptions, including precisely stated intensities and durations, down to the minute.

The best training plan doesn’t do much if it isn’t practical. Therefore we will make sure to build the training program around your life and plot workouts perfectly into your daily schedule. Using the Time Planner in your SPT Online Account, you can let us know about your availability for every day within each training phase. We will create a training plan for you that perfectly balances your daily life, training, and recovery, ensuring that you are getting the most out of your training.

Creating a super athletic body takes discipline, some planning, and a coordinated approach. Starting with the Bronze Coaching Package, we will frequently review your training log and ask for your personal feedback before planning your program for the next training phase. We will review logs in most formats. You can email a copy of your log at the end of each training block or grant your SPT Coach access to your online-based training log. If you don't have a log, we will provide you with a simple, straight forward template, which you can use to capture the most important training information for your Coach to review. Keeping a log of everything allows you to store and organize all past experiences, from which you can learn and benefit from in the future. It will also help you see how you are progressing and what your recovery is like. But most importantly, we will use your constant feedback directly to keep customizing your training program. It also happens very often that the actual workouts don't match the planned ones. By reviewing your log, your SPT Coach will make sure to base your next training phase on your actual training progress.

This feature is the progression of building your program around your personal schedule. However, unforeseen events might occur and prevent you from following through with your planned workouts. We believe that in order to become a well-rounded athlete, to prevent injury, and to tap your full cycling potential, it is crucial that strength training is integrated into your on-the bike schedule. Therefore a Phase-Specific Strength Plan (Bronze or higher) is part of your detailed daily training plan, tailored to your goals and perfectly complementing your on-the bike workouts. For each 2-4 week training phase we will provide you with a specific strength workout plan, giving you exact intensities, number of repetitions & sets, and detailed workout descriptions. Each exercise is linked to our Workout-Video-Knowledgebase, ensuring accurate execution and therefore making your strength training safe and highly effective.

 
Power-Based Training

Power-Based Training

Using a power meter is a great way to improve the effectiveness of your training. Other than heart rate, power is a direct measure of your performance, allowing us to evaluate if you are working the right energy system at the right time, essentially making sure that you are getting the most out of your training. Reading power meter data can be a minefield, so we will do it all for you. All you need to worry about is actually doing the training – we do the number crunching! You simply email us your power files and we will run all the analyses, giving you a precise feedback on how you can improve your workouts regarding cadence, intensity, number of intervals, etc. Recording and analyzing power is also a great way to track your progress and determine your training zones on a frequent basis.

We will let you perform field tests on a regular basis (once every 4- 8 weeks) to monitor your progress against your first week of testing. We will provide you with an exact protocol for the field tests as part of your training plan. You simply record your power and/or heart rate data for us to analyze. Regular testing allows us to track your progress through each block of training much more closely. It will give you measurable results on how you are improving from training phase to training phase. Furthermore, we are able to always provide you with your most up-to-date training zones and ensure that you are staying on track.

In the lab we will use many more parameters than during field testing, such as lactate and VO2max. In accordance with the SPT Philosophy, we have different test options to perfectly match your needs. We can conduct any of the standard tests that are widely used. However, we have developed tests that by far exceed the determination of just your anaerobic threshold. Using innovative test protocols, based on the latest research, we collect data from many different parameters by using high-end technology. Thus, we are able to create your complete performance profile. By identifying your particular strengths and weaknesses, we are able to tailor your training even better to your goals. Lab Testing is only available in our facilities in Berlin, Germany. Since most of our international athletes have a hard time coming in for a lab test, we implemented field testing, which by the way is astonishingly accurate if performed accurately. We can also use results from tests you perform in a lab close to you.

Besides optimized training and nutrition, a thorough preparation includes getting your equipment and your bike position dialed in. It is hard to stay on top of the latest equipment with all the new gear coming out every other week. Many athletes may ask themselves questions like: “How much faster will I go using these wheels?”, “Do I have the right frame for my dicipline?” or “Does the advantage justify the cost of this power meter?” Many cyclists start looking at the less important things first. For example a professional bike fit for about $250 will do much more for you than the newest version of your one-year-old bike, costing $4000 and weighing 100g less than the model you currently have. We will answer all of your questions regarding your equipment (frames, wheels, components, accessories), concerning weight, functionality, cost-benefit ratio, aerodynamic properties, etc. We will also assist you with optimizing your position on the bike.

We want you to feel totally comfortable when ordering. Therefore, we offer a training program that you can sign up for as much or as little time as you want. If your goal is to get on a pro team within a year then we can help you do that. If your goal is to get fit during the off season and you’re not sure how to prepare for next year, we can help you with that too. Whatever you want to achieve, we will do our very best to get your there. We work 100% within your needs and if your circumstances change, you just need to let us know and we will cancel your payments without any hassle. If you commit to 6 or 12 months in advance, you will be rewarded with a special rate.

No Start Up Fees

We know there are a lot of other coaching services available out there that charge a set-up fee for the first month. This is because a lot of effort goes into getting to know the athlete, building up an athlete profile, and planning the year ahead. A start-up fee allows them to cover their costs, so if you don’t keep up with the monthly program they will at least have made some sort of profit. We are so confident that you will make huge improvements with our program and stay with it, that we DO NOT need to charge a start-up fee.
