Case study: the perfect time trial position

 

Pro rider Patric Röstel wanted to improve his time trial position. When he came to us, he felt like he couldn`t get all of his power on the pedal. After riding in the aero position for 20 minutes he experienced heavy back pain and irritating pressure to the perineum as well as shoulder and neck pain. Patric is remarkably flexible and being 1.9 meters (6' 3'') tall he's just born to be a time trialist.

 

A bad time trial position, more than a few mins on this bike really is pain. The saddle is too low and the position is cramped up.

The first picture shows his original position on the bike. Patric's was pretty cramped up and his back was bent far back. The saddle was too low. His knee angle was only 137°. (Scientific studies show that a knee angle between 145° and 155° are best in order to reduce improper biomechanical stress on the knees and also allow a better power transmission. It even improves endurance performance.)
In Patric`s case the inadequate saddle height was also contributing to the arched back: knees moved too high on the top of the pedal stroke bumping into the belly and constricting the respiration.

Picture 2 shows Pat`s position after the bike fit. His seat height is perfect now. As a result of the new saddle position his hips are rotated forward way more than in his old position. The entire position is more stretched and Pat has a nice flat back. This flat position is a lot more aerodynamic.

For time trialing this is a perfect and extremely aerodynamic postion. A triathlet would prefer a more upright position for longer distances.

Looking at his new bike position from the front reveals how small the area is that is exposed to wind.

What also had to be considered in this case were the rules of the UCI. One of them states that the tip of the saddle has to be at least 5cm behind the bottom bracket.
Triathletes instead can move their saddle even 5cm in front of the bottom bracket, which allows them to rotate their body more forward and be more comfortable for a long period of time in a very aerodynamic position. That means that Pat`s position definitely wouldn`t work in a long distance triathlon.

All in all Ratric`s position is one of the most aerodynamic positions we have ever seen. Pat can ride this position for more than one our without experiencing any kind of pain due to wrong positioning. Unfortunately the leg pain due to hammering on the pedals is still there...

6. As soon as we receive payment we will send you an email with specific recommendations how to improve your position on the bike. We will give you exact directions of what to change and by how much. Support via telephone is also available.

 

8. You can keep sending us new videos until you and Synergy-Team are satisfied with your fit.
